A Bridge to Calculus—and to a Better World

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Bridge to Calculus was founded by Northeastern professor Dr. Robert Case to empower children from Boston’s underserved communities to succeed in advanced math classes.

This program is built on the need to address racial and social justice issues as they affect Boston’s youth. What distinguishes this program from others is the collaboration between Boston Public School teachers, Northeastern faculty, undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni of the program—who all come together to craft and deliver the Bridge to Calculus.

CONNECTING THE BOSTON COMMUNITY

Employers in our region, especially those with co-op positions, require coding skills and mathematical modeling, as well as strong mathematical skills. Students participating in Bridge to Calculus gain an imperative competitive edge that makes them imminently hirable. And because BtC works to strengthen the school system, the success of the program contributes to the greater success of the Boston Public Schools.

MATH QUESTION CENTER

Many Bridge to Calculus summer program students requested to continue the Math Question Center all year. This is how the Bob Case Academy Math Question Center, sponsored by Northeastern’s mathematics department, came to fruition. The Math Question Center operates year round and meets twice a week in the evenings to help students with math homework, as well as with college readiness inquiries. Students enjoy the opportunity to work with others and tackle interesting problems. Each session begins with a math-related question to foster community and to get both students and mentors thinking critically.

Teaching Boston's brightest

Launched in 1994, the Bridge to Calculus summer program offered by the Department of Mathematics primarily serves Boston Public High School students entering their junior and senior year in the fall and who intend to take Calculus. Bridge to Calculus is offered for free to those students who are accepted into the summer program and breakfast is provided. The program enrolls approximately 120-150 students each summer.

A Community of Mentors

The classes are taught by experienced Boston Public High School teachers in collaboration with mentors under the supervision of a Math Department Faculty member.

Celebrating Student Success

After a successful completion of the program, students will receive both a certificate of completion and a fall placement recommendation by the Lead Instructor for Pre-Calculus, Regular Calculus, AP-AB or AP-BC Calculus

Calculus Field Day

Hosted by Northeastern’s math department. Calculus Field Day is designed to challenge students’ knowledge in calculus, help them prepare for their AP Calculus tests in the spring, and nurture their passion for mathematics.

COMPUTATION tHINKING AND eQUITY

Designed to teach students about computer algorithms and their role in society in a 4-day virtual boot camp. Participants worked on a group project to devise an equitable algorithm for college admissions. Learning computational thinking and data visualization, and completing readings and discussions related to diversity and equity.

Summer 2021: Student Projects

These projects were organized by BTC students, and they creatively combined real-life experience with CALCULUS. While promoting other elements, they also actively demonstrated the significance of BTC projects.
